It wasn’t something that was on our architectural must-see’s whilst we were over there but after realizing we were staying close by we decided to go see it.

It occupies a prominent location above the main shopping street and a busy dual carriageway and at 46 meters tall it is visible from quite some way away. Its name translates as ‘beer brush’, whether that is because it looks like one I don’t know. Built between 1972 and 1976 it was originally three floors of bar, restaurant and nightclub, mixed in with periods of closure, as is its current state.

In 2010 graffiti artists gave the Bierpinsel its current look as part of the Turmkunst (Tower Art) 2010 project.

The original building, on what is now known as Museum Island was designed by Friedrich August Stueler and built between 1841 and 1859. Following the Second World War, when it was extensively bombed, the building was left in ruins until David Chipperfield in collaboration with Julian Harrap won the competition to rebuild it. Re-opened in 2009, the museum is a mix of entirely new architecture, which is brilliantly detailed and existing architecture (complete with bullet holes), which has been sensitively preserved and in places, lightly restored. There wasn’t an overriding agenda to completely replace and rebuild all that was lost, which rankled those with a more conservative disposition, but what resulted is a beautifully simple, beautifully detailed and strikingly sensitive restoration.

It is an absolute must see for anyone with even a passing interest in architecture.

You can find a bigger selection of (bigger if a little grainy due to the low light and no tripod) images on my Flickr pages- Neues Museum // Berlin

Fox Court is located on Gray’s Inn Road, just a five minute walk from my studio so really quite handy. A bit like the Wilton Road project, most of Gray’s Inn Road seems to be either a taxi rank or a bus stop but with a bit of timing and patience it can be used to your advantage. That is unless the taxis park directly in front, filling most of the shot in which case finding a new angle is the only answer.

The commission was carried out in late 2011 but because the website has only just been launched I am only now getting round to posting the images.

This project, a new build office building is on Wilton Road in Victoria, London and proved to be a bit of a nightmare shoot. The junction in the foreground of the images was incredibly busy and for most of my time on site the road doubled up as a taxi rank for the nearby Apollo Theatre, which was not helpful at all. But in the end I got some decent shots so not all bad.

As with the first shoot, there was to be a mix of still images and interactive panoramas focussing primarily on the areas that had changed. The aim of the shoot was to show how the spaces had changed and also to prospective customers through the website, how versatile the venue can be. In this post are a selection of the still images before hopefully adding the panoramas later in the week (if I can figure out how to make them iProduct friendly).

It is quite a long post as some of the images are massive, so if you scroll all the way to the bottom, you can see them in a more user friendly gallery instead.

I was lucky enough to attend a party at the top a few months ago, and the view from the top is incredible. Designed by Richard Seifert, Centrepoint stands 117m tall and was completed in 1966. Like its next door neighbour, it proved controversial, notably for its height, it sat empty for years, and conspiracy theorists even had their say. But this is it today, in all its concrete and glass glory (with a few photos from previous posts for good measure).
